What Is An Oil Change? Why Are They Important?

The moving parts inside the engine, like the pistons and valves, driveshafts, and more, all require lubrication to keep them running smoothly. Engine oil coats these components in a thin layer of lubricant so that they don’t damage one another as they move rapidly inside the engine.

Over time, the engine oil breaks down from the heat and friction of the engine. Eventually, the oil won’t lubricate the engine’s rapidly-moving parts, which can lead to severe engine damage. That’s why routine oil changes are so important. Fresh oil will protect your engine better than oil that is worn and dirty from thousands of miles of use.

What’s The Difference Between Semi-Synthetic Oil & Conventional Oil?

Conventional oil is little more than crude oil refined for automotive use. Meanwhile, full-synthetic oil is a chemically purified crude oil at the molecular level. Synthetic oil is stronger to lubricate with a consistent molecular structure and lasts longer than conventional oil.

However, full-synthetic oil is much more expensive than conventional. For many vehicles, we recommend semi-synthetic oil instead. Semi-synthetic oil is a blend of conventional and synthetic oils that provides an affordable balance between the value of conventional and the performance of full-synthetic.

How Often Do I Need An Oil Change For My Car?

Every vehicle and every engine is different. That’s why your vehicle came with a maintenance schedule that recommends how often to perform important maintenance services, including oil changes. Check your owner’s manual or give us a call, and we can look up the recommended maintenance schedule for your Volkswagen model.

For example, the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas only needs an oil change every 10,000 miles. That’s because it’s filled with full-synthetic oil from the factory. Older VW models with conventional oil will need an oil change every 3,000 - 5,000 miles instead.
